Top teams at women’s only FIVB Prague Open make no mistakes

 


Prague, Czech Republic, May
23, 2014 – All top teams at the women’s only FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour
Prague Open made it to the last 16 on Friday.


 

Much to the delight of the
Czech fans, first seeded home team Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova
entered the second elimination round with three straight wins.


 

Germany’s Laura Ludwig and
Kira Walkenhorst, second seeded in Prague and the Shanghai gold medallists, did
the same. Their compatriots and vice-world champions Karla Borger and Britta
Büthe (4th) also made it to the last 16 as pool winners. As did third seeded Germans
Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler.


 

The second round field also
features veterans Maria Antonelli and Juliana Felisberta. The Brazilians won
two silver medals (Fuzhou and Puerto Vallarta Open) in their first three events
and also topped their pool in Prague.


 

Fifth seeded Chen Xue and
Xinyi Xia from China, who won bronze in Fuzhou and Puerto Vallarta, finished
second in their pool, but booked a 2-0 win over Lithuania’s
Dumbauskaite/Povilaityte in the first knockout round.


 

There were also some
unexpected pool winners, like 9th seeded Bansley/Pavan and 21st seeded
Gioria/Giombini.


 

Canada and Italy claim top
position in pool play for the first time


 

Canada’s Heather Bansley
and Sarah Pavan and Italy’s Daniela Gioria and Laura Giombini became pool
winners on Friday for the first time in their careers. Both teams will continue
the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Prague Open in the second elimination
round on Saturday. More


 

Austria’s Schützenhöfer
leads her partner into the top 16 of the Prague Open


 

Austria’s Katharina
Schützenhöfer and Lena Plesiutschnig made it to the last 16 at the FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Tour Prague Open on Friday. It was the first time in their
short World Tour career the young pair made it to the second elimination round.

Czech favourites enjoy the
home support at the Prague Open


 

Top seeded Kristyna Kolocova
and Marketa Slukova have all the reasons to be confident at the FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Tour Prague Open. The Czech pair topped their pool with three
straight wins and they have all the support of the large home crowd on centre
court. But the home team was not at all pleased with their performance in their
last pool match against Thailand. More


 

The women’s only Prague
Open continues on Saturday with the second knockout round at 10.00, followed by
the quarterfinals in the afternoon. The semifinals and medal matches are played
on Sunday in the stadium on Stvanice Island and will be televised.


 

After Prague the World Tour
stops in Russia for the double gender Anapa Open (May 27-June 1) and the Moscow
Grand Slam (June 11-15). In between those two events the European teams travel
to Cagliari in Italy for the CEV European Championships.
