Making the “Benjamin Button of beach volleyball”

Fort Lauderdale, Fla., September 22, 2015 - When Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson take to the sand for his first match here September 29 in the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park, the American pair will form the oldest tandem competing in the international Beach Volleyball event.

With the team's combined age being 74 years, Gibb is the oldest at 39 as he is competing for his third Olympic berth after placing fifth in both the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Summer Games with Sean Rosenthal.  With Patterson the "kid" at 35, the two Americans started playing together in 2013 with the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals being their 31st international event together.

With their age, training off the beach has been vital for the two players.  In a www.swatchmajorseries.com article, Patterson talked about training with Timothy Pelot, a Strength & Conditioning Sport Physiologist for the US Olympic Committee.  In the article, Patterson was quoted.

"I came on board with Timothy as my full-time strength coach in 2013 and committed 100% to the science behind advanced conditioning here. Tim has given me the ability to be stronger, healthier and better conditioned than I have ever been in my seven years on the beach. The detailed planning, gym time, constant contact and accountability have taken my game to the next level - preparing me for the SWATCH Beach Finals and the Olympics in Rio next year. I would never have had a shot at Rio if it weren’t for Tim and the USOC investing in us as elite athletes. At the age of 35 I like to say that Tim has made me the “Benjamin Button of beach volleyball.”
