Disappointment, but elation

 
Contagem, Brazil, September 20, 2015 - It was not the finish SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals participants Evandro Goncalves and Pedro Solberg wanted, but placing second to the legendary Beach Volleyball pair of Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos here Sunday in the finals of the Brazilian domestic stop is not all bad.After being named to the Brazilian Olympic Beach Volleyball team earlier in the week by beating out Emanuel and Ricardo for the second men’s spot on the Rio 2016 Summer Games roster, Evandro and Pedro biggest victory of the weekend happen Saturday in the Contagem quarter-finals were the pair eliminated reigning FIVB world champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-19) win in 38 minutes.After defeating Marico Araujo and Luciano Ferreira 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) in a 41-minute semi-final match late Saturday evening, Evandro and Pedro fell 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 15-13) to Emanuel and Ricardo in the 58-minute gold medal match.  While Evandro and Pedro were seeking their third domestic title together, Emanuel and Ricardo were topping a Brazilian tour podium for the 30th-time and third since resuming their partnership last September.The Contagem gold medal was also Emanuel’s 153rd in his career which started in 1994 and is highlighted by Olympic (Athens 2004) and FIVB World Championship (Rio 2003) gold medals with Ricardo.  Overall, Emanuel teamed with Ricardo for 109 gold medals, including 77 FIVB World Tour titles, one FIVB challenger crown and the 2007 PanAm championship on Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro.The women’s Brazilian finale Saturday also featured SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals participants - Talita Antunes/Larissa Franca and Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas.  The two teams were meeting for the 11th-time on the Brazilian domestic tour with Talita and Larissa improving their advantage to 10-1 by defeating Agatha and Barbara 2-1 (18-21, 21-15, 15-13) in 56 minutes.Agatha and Barbara, the gold medal team at the 2015 FIVB World Championships in The Hague this past July, also trail 2-1 in the meetings on the FIVB World Tour.  Talita and Larissa posted a 2-1 (32-30, 18-21, 15-12) win in 71 minutes over Agatha and Barbara in the gold medal match September 6 at the Rio Open.
