Nowakowski on fire, keeps Warsaw on target in Poland's PlusLiga

Warsaw, Poland, March 2, 2020 - Piotr Nowakowski has been picking up award after award in Poland's PlusLiga, as his most recent performances have helped keep VERVA Warsaw ORLEN Paliwa at the top of the table, one point ahead of ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle, as the competition comes within three rounds of the end of the Regular Season.

The 32-year-old middle blocker picked up back-to-back match MVP awards within a few days, bringing his total this season to six, on par with Grzegorz Lomacz of PGE Skra Belchatow and Rafal Faryna of MKS Bedzin at the top of the list.

This weekend Nowakowski was named MVP of the match against GKS Katowice for leading his side to a stunning comeback win after a slow start, 3-2 (19-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13). Nowakowski scored 17 points for Warsaw, including a 69% attacking efficiency with 11 kills from 16 swings in addition to four blocks and two aces.

This comes after he bagged the MVP award midweek in Warsaw's win over Asseco Resovia Rzeszow 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18).

Although Warsaw have crashed out of the European Champions League after the completion of pool play, Nowakowski stands top of the list of best blockers by average by set with .93 (just ahead of Kuzbass Kemerovo's Mikhail Shcerbakov on .90).

Middle blocker Nowakowski featured on the Dream Team of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, which Poland won after also winning the competition in 2014. He helped Poland qualify for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and will hope to help his country improve on their performance at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro four years ago when they finished fifth tied with Argentina, Canada and Iran.
