Vienna, Austria, August 5, 2017 - Since Brazilian men have won 14 of the 30 medals given in World Championship history, it is no surprise that the statistical leaders lean heavily in favor of the South American powerhouse.
In terms of all-time stats in World Championship events, the top three players in kills are all from Brazil, the top two in blocks, and the leader in aces (as well as three of the top five).
• Alison Cerutti tops the charts in both kills (440) and blocks (171), with sizable leads over the next highest person. And as a bonus, he is fourth in aces.
• Alison’s partner, Bruno Oscar Schmidt, likewise has his names in several categories. He is second in all-time kills with 395 and fifth in aces (36).
• Pedro Solberg’s 363 kills puts him third on that list, while he is second in blocks (115).
• Evandro Goncalves is already at the top of the career aces list with 72. He established the record for most in a single tournament when he had 30 in the 2015 World Championships, and this event he logged 26, the second most any player has ever had. Evandro had 10 of them in one match in Vienna, to go with eight in another match.
In the Vienna world championships, the top two players in terms of aces per set have advanced to the quarterfinals.
• Evandro is setting the pace at 2.3 each set, while Poland’s Bartosz Losiak is at 1.9.
• Hometown hero Clemens Doppler is getting 1.08 aces a set, good for seventh most among the 96 players in Vienna.
• Of the 24 most prolific servers, 10 are into the quarterfinals, with Poland, Austria, and the United States boasting both players in that top tier of servers.
Christiaan Varenhorst, Cherif Younousse and Alex Ranghieri all tallied 10 blocks in a single match this tournament, tying for the most ever in a single World Championship match.
• Varenhorst has a chance to better that mark as they are competing in the quarterfinals. Varenhorst has the second highest average, with 2.75 blocks per set in the tournament.
• Russia’s Nikita Liamin, at 2.36, is the next highest player who is still active.
Doppler is getting 7.25 kills per set, the fourth most among all players here and most among athletes who are still in the competition.
• Not far behind him are Maarten van Garderen (7.17 kills per set), Nikita Liamin (7.09) and Andre Loyola (7.08).
