Venezuelans hit rhythm to hang in at Rio 2016

Rio de Janeiro, August 10, 2016 – Venezuela’s Olaya Pazo and Norisbeth Gonzalez recorded their first win at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games elimination rounds with a 2-0 (21-16, 22-20) victory over Costa Rica’s Karen Cope Charles and Natalia Alfaro at Copacabana Beach Arena on Wednesday.

Olaya Pazo, Venezuela
“Before we said ‘let’s find our rhythm’. Whether we win or lose we just want to play at our level that we know we can and that’s what we did and that’s why we won.

“We have at least one more match at this stage. We are really excited and will wait to see who we have. We know whoever we have will be tough, so we are just going to wait and prepare ourselves the best we can and enjoy ourselves again.”

Karen Cope Charles, Costa Rica
“It has been a great experience and we’ve never had something like this before. We are trying to have a lot of fun. Today we were a bit stressed out because we felt we could win the game and made a lot of mistakes, but besides that it has been great.

“It is hard because we don’t have a lot of money, so we can only come to a couple of events. We will try to find a sponsor to try and keep playing to this level. If we’d played more at this level we would have done better, but I think we doing pretty good. These teams play all year round and we just met them, so it’s pretty cool.”
