Spaniards cruise on for second win in two at Rio 2016

Rio de Janeiro, August 8, 2016 – Spain’s Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez made it two wins from two at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games when they beat the Czech Republic’s Marketa Slukova and Barbara Hermannova 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) at the Copacabana Beach Arena on Monday.

Here’s what they said after the match…

Elsa Baquerizo, Spain
“We have a very tough pool and all of the group is tough and the Czech Republic are a very good team and a very stable team. We knew we had to do our best and we got the last two points in the second set to close it up.

“We want to go and enjoy ourselves and have fun on the court This isn’t the end of the competition, just one more match making sure we are going through the group. It takes a little pressure off as we know we don’t have to win though we want to win.”

Liliana Fernandez, Spain
“We are doing great with our side-out and great with our block defence. Our strategy we are enjoying on the court and the crowd is just amazing, so everything is perfect right now.”

Barbara Hermannova, Czech Republic
“They have played together for five or six years and are very experienced and today we didn’t play the best volleyball we can.”

Market Slukova, Czech Republic
“They (next opponents Ana Gallay and Georgia Klug, Argentina) know their position and we know our position. They are tough fighters. They are a really hard team once they get on a run. We will sleep and shake it off tomorrow and get prepared and give it all on Wednesday.”
