Nummerdor and Varenhorst through with ‘perfect’ gameplan

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 12, 2016 – The Netherlands’ Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst progressed to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games quarterfinals after they defeated Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) at the Copacabana Beach Arena on Friday.

Here’s what they said after the match…

Reinder Nummerdor, the Netherlands
“Our block defence was good, but in the rally we couldn’t make a lot of points, which was a pity and something that hasn’t been as we wanted it throughout the tournament.

“I think the gameplan worked perfectly for us.

“We practice together (with potential quarterfinal opponents and fellow Dutchmen Robert Meeuwsen and Alexander Brouwer) every day almost. We played each other twice this year and it is one-one. It is tough to play your own country, it’s not nice, but it is what it is in our sport and we have to deal with it. But first they have to win.”

Lombardo Ontiveros, Mexico
“It is a little bittersweet. We accomplished one target, but we want more. These guys are a great team and made the necessary adjustments and that is why we lost.

“The first set was close, but the second set less so.

“Our first aim was to make the elimination round and then to push as much as we can. This competition is very weird because a lot of the good teams have lost.”
