Herrera and Gavira ignore their knocks to see off Gibb and Patterson

Rio de Janeiro, August 10, 2016 – Spain’s Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira booked their place in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games beach volleyball tournament round of 16 when they defeated the USA’s Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 15-7) at the Copacabana Beach Volleyball Arena on Wednesday.

Pablo Herrera, Spain
“We were feeling pretty good, and played pretty good. We had some physical problems, but we're so happy the game ended up this way.

“The United States are a complicated team, they are a great team and we just couldn't respond in the second set. The only goal we had was to make it to the tie break set and we knew we would win.”

Adrian Gavira, Spain
“It was a great win because yesterday we didn't know how we were going to play.

“I've had some problems with my right knee and had some problems during the game with my power, but the Spanish medical team did an awesome job helping.

“We have shown that when we were almost losing we were able to bring out the Spanish energy and now we are qualified into the next round.”

Jacob Gibb, USA
“It was real windy down there and they (Herrera and Gavira) were bombing jump serves, so it came down to that.

“We have to sit around and watch the next match to see if we're still alive. That's all my mind is on, I want to keep playing. I feel like we have a lot of life in this team left, so I hope we can keep playing, I hope we're still alive.

“It was a tough pool, everybody is great. It's just an uncomfortable spot for me and it's going to come down to points.”
