Elsa and Lili quiet Copacabana crowd to top pool

Rio de Janeiro, August 10, 2016 – Spain’s Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez made it three wins from three at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games eliminations rounds with a 2-0 (21-17, 22-20) victory over Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas at Copacabana Beach Arena on Wednesday.

Elsa Baquerizo, Spain
“They probably had the pressure being here in Rio and preparing for months for this, but we had all the people against us.

“There were a few rallies and people really enjoyed it and they know the game too, so that is important.

“If we had to play the last match to go through the pressure would be higher, but being first in the pool is important. We’ve played three very good matches and that makes us confident.”

Liliana Fernandez, Span
“We were waiting for this game, we wanted the crowd against us and to feel and to know what it was like and it was great.”

Barbara Seixas, Brazil
“We knew that would be a tough game, they are improving each tournament and have a lot of experience including an Olympic Games.

“They took advantage of the opportunities they had during the game and also with the service which made it difficult for us. We couldn’t take the opportunities we had.

“We are living the dream, we fought so much to be here, especially between the Brazilian teams, they are quite competitive and fighting for a spot to be here. We take this energy from the crowd and family and friends as fuel for us. We feel good playing here.”
