Rio de Janeiro, August 8, 2016 – The Netherland’s Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen made it two wins from two at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games when they beat Germany’s Markus Bockermann and Lars Fluggen 2-1 (21-19, 17-21, 16-14) at the Copacabana Beach Arena on Monday.
Here’s what they said after the match…
Robert Meeuwsen (NED)
“The Germans played really well. The first set we were able to win the set, though it was already close. The second set we made quite a lot of mistakes, and in the third set we were behind and things were not looking very good for us, but we kept playing very confident and playing forward and that meant we got the victory.”
Alexander Brouwer (NED)
“We were getting a bit negative on serve and that affected our side-out game. I’m really happy as we were aggressive and playing our style at the end.
Now we’ve had two matches. The first was pretty easy, but the second we had match points against us and we recovered.
“On the last day before our first match, we practised in Barra at the beach between the locals, and we were training really hard.
“It was only after a couple of minutes that we started hitting balls that they realised, 'Oh, these guys are competing in the Olympics'. It's just such a relaxed beach volleyball atmosphere and we love to play here.”
