Doppler & Horst create three-way Beach Volleyball pool tie

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 10, 2016 - Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst did Italian rivals Adrian Carambula and Alexander Ranghieri a favor here early Thursday morning by winning their final Pool A match over a Canadian pair to create a three-way tie for atop the group standings in the Beach Volleyball competition at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

With the three-way tie between teams with a 2-1 record, Carambula and Ranghieri captured Pool A with the best point ratio (1.1159) for the matches play among the three teams with Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt second (108988) and Doppler and Horst third (0.8351).

With the tie-breaker secured, Carambula and Ranghieri will become the No. 1-seeded team in the 16-team men’s elimination bracket with opening knock-out matches being played Friday and Saturday.  Alison/Bruno and Doppler/Horst will learn their seeding following a Friday evening draw.

For the record, Doppler and Horst scored a 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 15-8) win in 52 minutes over Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter of Canada.  It was the third international meeting between the two teams with the Austrians now leading 2-1.

Earlier Wednesday, Alison and Bruno defeated Carambula and Ranghieri for the seventh-straight time internationally with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) win in 45 minutes.  Alison and Bruno had an opportunity to win the pool if Doppler and Horst had been defeated by the Canadians to force a two-way tie between the Brazilians and Carambula and Ranghieri.  The deadlock for the pool title was in favor of Alison and Bruno due to having a better overall point ratio (1,094 to 1.067).
