Carambula & Ranghieri leading, but big challenge ahead

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 8, 2016 - With an earlier upset here Monday of top-seeded Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil by a team from Austria, Italians Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri are alone atop Pool A in the men’s Beach Volleyball completion at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after posting an evening win over a Canadian pair.

In posting a 2-1 (21-18, 14-21, 15-11) win in 60 minutes over Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter of Canada, Carambula and Ranghieri are unbeaten in their two Olympic matches with Alison and Bruno tied for second with Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst of Austria with 1-1 records.

Binstock and Schachter, who dropped a 2-0 (21-19, 22-20) decision in 43 minutes to Alison and Bruno Saturday, play Doppler and Horst Wednesday.  The two teams have split a pair of international matches with none being played in 2016 on the FIVB World Tour.

Carambula and Ranghieri meet Alison and Bruno Wednesday as the Italians will be seeking their first win over the Brazilians internationally.  Alison and Bruno are 6-0 against the Italians with three victories coming in pool play matches at FIVB World Tour stops in Germany, Croatia and Switzerland in June and July.

In their Monday match with the Canadians, Carambula and Ranghieri led throughout the first set and lost the second set after the Canadians broke from an 11-11 to score five-straight points to take a commanding 16-11 lead.  In the decider, the Italians never trail as Carambula and Ranghieri broke from a 2-2 tie to take leads at 6-2, 10-5 and 13-8.
