Calm heads pull Swiss duo through

Rio de Janeiro, August 11, 2016 – Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr beat the Netherlands’ Sophie van Gestel and Jantine van der Vlist 2-1 (21-16, 20-22, 15-7) to win their final pool match at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games, at Copacabana Beach Arena on Thursday to ensure their progress to the elimination rounds.

Here’s what they said after the match…

Joana Heidrich, Switzerland
“I think the key was that we stayed calm and relaxed after the first set because they played really well and served well in the first set. They just handled the wind better, OK they are Dutch. That's not unexpected.

“We just stayed calm and really tried to stay focused and we think that, that was the key. We changed to the other player and maybe she wasn't expecting that, you never know. The key was that we didn't get nervous after the first set, the (other) ones were not happy.

“We really wanted this win tonight and we are really happy we achieved it. Probably too tired to celebrate it. The tournament is not over, we are on to the next round and staying focused.”

Jantine van der Vlist, the Netherlands
“Disappointed for sure. I think the setting was a problem, we set each other a bit too tight for the block. We showed some good stuff in the first two sets but we fell apart at the end.”
