Aussies left to rue Swiss escape

Rio de Janeiro, August 8, 2016 – Switzerland’s Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre beat Australia’s Nicole Laird and Mariafe Artacho de Solar 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 21-19) at the Copacabana Beach Arena on Monday.

Here’s what they said after the match…

Nicole Laird, Australia
“It was a tough match in every way. Both teams struggled at times, but we both worked hard the whole match.

“It's one of those moments when we had the opportunity in our hands, we couldn't quite finish off the point and that was the only difference.

“I think it's just that undying belief in your skills and yourself that environments like this shake out of you a little bit. That's the beauty of the Olympic Games.

“The best players in the world can have so much self-doubt on the court just because of the pressure cooker that it is, and it's something to learn from, not something to attach to.

“We've got one more opportunity here, we've got nothing to lose. It's do or die, and if we don't bring our best then we're out of the tournament.”
