Alison and Bruno carry Olympic torch

Vitoria, Brazil, May 19, 2016 – Alison and Cerutti were given an early taste of what to expect when they go for gold at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games when they carried the Olympic Torch through the streets of Alison’s home town, Vitoria. The reigning FIVB Beach Volleyball world champions were the latest pair to carry the torch on its journey around Brazil that will culminate at the Opening Ceremony on August 5 when the Olympic Flame is lit. The Torch Relay began in Olympia with the lighting of the flame ceremony. Greek gymnast Eleftherios Petrounias lit the torch and then handed it to Brazil’s Barcelona 1992 and Athens 2004 Olympic gold medallist Giovane Gavio.Gavio’s run started the flame on its journey, which featured 450 torch bearers carrying it over 2,200 kilometres in Greece. It then travelled to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne before it arrived in Brazil on May 3. From national capital Brasilia the flame will visit 328 towns and cities and feature 12,000 torch bearers. Alison and Bruno are the favourites for Olympic gold and if they do they will follow in the footsteps of compatriots Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos, who won 2003 World Championship gold and then topped the podium at Athens 2004. Alison won silver alongside Emanuel at London 2012 and wrote on his Facebook page, “The Olympic flame passed through the state today...very emotional to take part in the torch relay, a unique, unforgettable and emotional moment.”
