Qualifiers dominate the U23 World Champships in Myslowice

Myslowice, Poland, June 13,
2014 - As the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships moved into the
elimination phase on Friday, one thing became clear. The qualification teams
are doing well in Myslowice.

Five out of the six pool
winners in the men’s competition came from the qualification tournament.
Brazil’s Saymon/Marcus and Latvia’s Haralds/Armands even lost in qualification,
but advanced as lucky losers to main draw, to eventually win their pool.

In the women’s competition USA’s
Larsen/Metter, who were on the reserve lucky loser list and got in at the last
moment, topped their pool. As did their compatriots Hughes/Woolever, who also
started out as lucky losers.

Last year’s medallists
Bartosz Losiak (gold) from Poland, Austria’s Tobias Winter and Lorenz
Petutschnig (bronze), Brazil’s Eduarda Santos Lisboa (silver) and Canada’s Melissa
Humana-Paredes and Taylor Pischke (bronze) are still in the tournament, but did
not win their pool. They all had to play in the first elimination round to
advance to the last 16.

continue on Saturday at 9.00 with the second elimination round and
quarterfinals for both genders. The semifinals and medal matches are played on
Sunday at the Slupna Park centre court.

Myslowice also staged the
inaugural U23 in 2013. This year the FIVB has added a fourth age-group event to
the calendar, the U17 World Champions. The Mexican town of Acapulco is hosting
this tournament from July 15-20.

The other tournaments are the
U21 in Larnaka, Cyprus (July 23-27) and the U19 in Porto, Portugal (July
29-August 3). Starting this year all the under-age events will be held every
two years instead of annual.
