Former medallists return to U23 World Champs in Myslowice

Myslowice, Poland, June 10,
2014 – The second edition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships
in Myslowice will feature 36 teams per gender from all the five continents.
Some of the 2013 medallists have returned to the Polish mining town to chase
down another medal.

Gold medallist and local favourite
Bartosz Losiak is among them, but he won’t be playing with his long-time buddy Piotr
Kantor because the latter has a serious injury. Losiak will now team up with
Michal Bryl, a former youth world champion.

Last year’s bronze medallists
Lorenz Petutschnig and Tobias Winter also arrived in Myslowice, as did Brazil’s
15-year old Eduarda Santos Lisboa. She will not be playing with Thais Rodrigues
again, but with 21-year old Carolina Horta Maxima.

Last but not least Melissa
Humana-Paredes and Taylor Pischke have returned. The Canadian team won bronze
last year, but had to start in qualification this year because they missed the
Canadian trials. They were one of four women’s teams to make it to the main
draw on Tuesday.

Germany’s Lorenz Schümann and
Dominik Stork made a strong comeback at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World
Championships in Myslowice after a year of injury and sickness.
The German team was seeded

The main draw at the U23 in
Myslowice features 6 pools of 6 teams for each gender. The round robin matches
are scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The top 4 of each pool
qualifies for the single elimination phase. The semifinals and medal matches
for both genders are scheduled for Sunday.

For Wednesday an amazing
total of 72 matches are scheduled, beginning at 8:00. The number of courts has
been increased to six.
For different reasons some of
the main draw teams were not able to travel to Myslowice. So in addition to the
four teams per gender that won the final qualification round on Tuesday, three
women’s and five men’s qualification teams advanced as lucky losers. Those
teams are: women’s: Babenka/Mileuskaya (BLR), Trans/Guldager (DEN), Dörfler/N.Strauss
(AUT) and men’s Kandolf/Dressler (AUT), Saymon/Marcus (BRA), Overgaard/Abell
(DEN), Kravets/Denysenko (UKR) and Haralds/Armands (LAT).

Last year Myslowice, a
Silesian mining town located 70 km outside Krakow, hosted the inaugural U23
World Championships. The FIVB age-group calendar features three more world
championships this year: the inaugural U17 in Mexico (July 15-20), the U21 in
Cyprus (July 22-27) and the U19 in Portugal (July 29-August 3).
