World Championships medallists lead German teams at Shanghai Grand Slam

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 3, 2014 – FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Championships medallists Karla Borger and Britta Buthe and
Jonathan Erdman and Kay Matysik will spearhead the German teams’ challenge at
the first Grand Slam of the season in Shanghai.

The tournament runs from April 29 – May 4 and is
the first of nine Grand Slams on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, which
also features 11 Open tournaments and accrues points from continental and
domestic tours.

Borger and Buthe won silver at the 2013 World Championships
in Mazury, Poland, while Erdman and Matysik overcame their disappointment at
missing out on the final to claim the bronze medals.

In total there are four female teams and four male
sides taking to the beach in China’s financial capital.

Ilka Semmler and Katrin Holtwick and Laura Ludwig
and Kia Walkenhorst are the other two teams and both sides enjoyed success on
the beach in 2013.

Semmler and Holtwick started the year by winning
bronze at the season-opening Fuzhou Open, and then went on to win silver at the
Berlin Grand Slam and bronze at the Long Beach and The Hague Grand Slams.

Ludwig and Walkenhorst meanwhile marked their debut
season as a team in 2013 by winning silver at the Moscow and Sao Paolo Grand
Slams and bronze at the Xiamen Grand Slam and the CEV European
Championships.

In the men’s draw Alexander Walkenhorst and Stefan
Windscheif, Markus Bockermann and Mischa Urbatzka and Armin Dollinger and
Clemens Wickler are the other three teams that will compete on Jinshan
beach.
