News Beach volleyball 03/04/2014 World Championships medallists lead German teams at Shanghai Grand Slam Lausanne, Switzerland, April 3, 2014 – FIVB BeachVolleyball World Championships medallists Karla Borger and Britta Buthe andJonathan Erdman and Kay Matysik will spearhead the German teams’ challenge atthe first Grand Slam of the season in Shanghai. The tournament runs from April 29 – May 4 and isthe first of nine Grand Slams on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, whichalso features 11 Open tournaments and accrues points from continental anddomestic tours. Borger and Buthe won silver at the 2013 World Championshipsin Mazury, Poland, while Erdman and Matysik overcame their disappointment atmissing out on the final to claim the bronze medals. In total there are four female teams and four malesides taking to the beach in China’s financial capital.Ilka Semmler and Katrin Holtwick and Laura Ludwigand Kia Walkenhorst are the other two teams and both sides enjoyed success onthe beach in 2013. Semmler and Holtwick started the year by winningbronze at the season-opening Fuzhou Open, and then went on to win silver at theBerlin Grand Slam and bronze at the Long Beach and The Hague Grand Slams.Ludwig and Walkenhorst meanwhile marked their debutseason as a team in 2013 by winning silver at the Moscow and Sao Paolo GrandSlams and bronze at the Xiamen Grand Slam and the CEV EuropeanChampionships. In the men’s draw Alexander Walkenhorst and StefanWindscheif, Markus Bockermann and Mischa Urbatzka and Armin Dollinger andClemens Wickler are the other three teams that will compete on Jinshanbeach.
