Brazil’s Ricardo/Alvaro withdraw from Shanghai Grand Slam

 
Shanghai, China, April 29, 2014 – Brazilian tandem Ricardo Alex Costa Santos and Alvaro Morais Filho have withdrawn from the US$800,000 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball Shanghai Grand Slam men’s Main Draw through illness.
 
Alvaro, who had captured the bronze medal in Shanghai last year and finished fifth at the season-opening Fuzhou Open with Ricardo, became sick after arriving at Shanghai and decided to pull out of the tournament.
 
In the absence of Ricardo/Alvaro, Pablo Herrera Allepuz and Adrian Gavira Collado of Spain was moved up to the position of the second seeds behind Sean Rosenthal/Philip Dalhausser of USA while American duo Tri Bourne and John Hyden will take part in the 32-team Main Draw as lucky losers.
 
Newly-crowned Fuzhou Open champions Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo of Italy were named the seventh seeds and Shanghai Grand Slam title holders Jacob Gibb/Casey Patterson of USA were eighth. The men’s Main Draw tournament will start on Wednesday morning and thirty-two teams will play a single round robin in eight groups with top three finishers from each group to advance to the 24-team knockout stage.
