Main draw of the FIVB U19 World Championships set to go

 


Porto, Portugal, July 10,
2013 – After two rounds of qualification on Wednesday eight teams earned a spot
in the main draw of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Porto.


 

In the boys' competition
teams from Switzerland, Austria, Norway and Russia advanced. Germany, the
Netherlands, France and Brazil all added a team in the girls' competition.


 

Additionally four lucky
losers per gender will complete the 32 teams main draw pool play, because due
to travelling problems some of the main draw teams were not able to make it to
Porto in time.
 Russia upset top seeds in U19 qualifications



 

Russia’s Oleg Stoyanovskiy
and Artem Yarzutkin upset top seeded Pedro Henrique Resende Santos and Matheus
Maia Terra de Faria in the qualification tournament of the FIVB Beach
Volleyball U19 World Championships on Wednesday.

The Russians defeated the
Brazilians 2-0 (22-20 21-15) after another 2-0 (21-14 21-18) win over Latvia’s
Reinis Pridans and Pauls Alberts van der Beks in their first qualification

Brazil hold off Norway to advance to main draw

Brazil’s Andressa Cavalcanti
Ramalho and Paula Moniz Hoffmann held off a strong challenge by Norway in the
final qualification round on Wednesday to advance to the main draw of the FIVB
Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Porto.


 

In a tight match that lasted
over an hour the number one seeds lost the first set to Norway’s Benedicte
Maaseide and Cecilie Woie, but came back strong in the second. In the tiebreak
the Brazilian girls survived three Norwegian match points to finish the game at
their second: 20-22 21-10 19-17. More


 

The FIVB U19 World
Championships continue on Thursday with the first day of main draw. A total of
32 teams per gender divided over eight pools compete in a round robin. The top
three of each pool advances to the elimination phase, which starts on
Saturday.The semifinals and medal matches for both boys and girls are scheduled
for Sunday.


 

Porto hosted the U19 World
Championships once before in 2010. The event is the final out of three FIVB age
group tournaments this year.
