Men’s field eyeing chance to dethrone reigning champions

Stare Jablonki, Poland, July 1, 2013 – The men’s competition at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, Mazury 2013 will begin on Tuesday, with 47 sides out to dethrone reigning champions Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti of Brazil.

USA’s Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal are the leading pair challenging the number one seeds and they arrive in Poland having won gold at the most recent event, the Rome Grand Slam just over a week ago and they start against Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros of Mexico.

Their fellow Americans Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson will also be confident of their chances of leaving Stare Jablonki with a medal in their suitcases having racked up one gold medal and two silvers in their first season together.

Before thinking about the latter rounds though they must face Ukraine’s powerful duo, Sergiy Popov and Valeriy Samoday in their opening fixture.

Poland’s leading duo Mariusz Prudel and Grzegorz Fijalek carry the host nation’s hopes and aim to get their campaign to win a home World Championships medal off to a winning start against Inocencio Lario Carrillo and Javier Monfort Minaya from Spain on what is likely to be a packed centre court.
