Germans eye chance to take control of pool

Stare Jablonki, Poland, July 2, 2013 – German duo Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik will be aiming to seize control of pool H when the men’s tournament at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 resumes on Wednesday.

They beat Argentina’s Pablo Bianchi and Facundo Del Coto 2-0 (21-11, 21-14) and know that if they can defeat Venezuela’s Igor Hernandez and Jesus Villafane, who enjoyed a victory over USA’s Todd Rogers and Ryan Doherty that they will be top of their pool with one match remaining.

Brazilian pair Evandro Goncalves and Vitor Felipe have a similar opportunity when they meet Spain’s Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera after they upset fellow Brazilians Pedro Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt, the fifth seeds.

However, Gavira and Herrera will be seeking a second victory themselves, while Pedro and Bruno will be out to get their campaign started against The Netherlands’ Michiel van Dorsten and Tim Oude Elferink.

The USA’s leading team Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal meanwhile will seek to maintain the momentum of their opening win against Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros, when they play Sebastian Chevallier and Mats Kovatsch of Switzerland.

The men’s competition continues on Wednesday with another round of pool play. After the final round on Thursday 32 teams, the first and second ranked in each pool and the top eight third ranked teams, advance to the elimination phase. The semifinals and medal matches are scheduled for Sunday. The women’s competition is one day ahead and concludes on Saturday.
